UPI Transaction Limit: Why Do Payments Fail Even When You Have Enough Balance?
UPI payments have become a part of everyday life, whether you’re paying a friend, shopping online, or settling utility bills. But every UPI transaction comes with certain limits set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and your bank.
Explore the latest UPI transaction limits, including daily, weekly, monthly, bank-wise, and special limits.
What Is the UPI Transaction Limit?
The transaction limit of UPI is the maximum amount you can transfer through UPI within a specified period.
The standard UPI transaction limit in India for most person-to-person transfers is ₹1,00,000 per day, although individual banks may set lower limits.

What Is the UPI Transaction Limit Per Day?
The standard UPI transaction limit per day is ₹1 lakh for regular peer-to-peer (P2P) and merchant transactions across most UPI apps. In addition to the amount limit, users can generally make up to 20 UPI transactions in 24 hours. However, the exact limit may vary depending on your bank and the UPI app you use.
Is There a UPI Transaction Limit Per Week?
There is no standard NPCI weekly UPI transaction limit. While NPCI does not prescribe a weekly cap, some banks may set their own internal weekly transaction limits based on their policies and account types.
Is There a UPI Transaction Limit Per Month?
There is no standard NPCI monthly UPI transaction limit. Most banks rely on daily transaction limits, but some may impose cumulative monthly caps for specific account types or customer categories

Certain UPI transactions have higher limits of up to ₹5 lakh for eligible merchant categories. These enhanced limits may vary depending on your bank and the merchant.
- Capital Markets: Up to ₹5 lakh

Steps to increase your UPI limit:
- Open your bank’s mobile or internet banking portal.
- Go to UPI Settings or Transaction Limits.
- Check your existing limit.
- Increase it to the maximum permitted by your bank.
- Save the updated settings.
If you need to transfer more than ₹1 lakh, consider using NEFT, RTGS or IMPS instead.

| Savings account | Up to ₹1,00,000 per day |
| Merchant account | As per bank policy |
What Is the UPI First Transaction Limit and Cooling Period?
If you register a new UPI account, change your SIM card or switch to a new mobile device, your bank may temporarily restrict transactions through a cooling period limit. This security measure helps reduce the risk of fraud.
| Situation | Temporary Limit |
| New UPI registration | ₹5,000 during the first 24 hours |
| SIM replacement | ₹5,000 during the first 24 hours |
| New device registration | ₹5,000 during the first 24 hours |
Is There Any UPI Transaction Limit for Income Tax in India?
There is no separate UPI transaction limit for income tax in India. Using UPI does not make a transaction taxable. However, the purpose of the transaction, such as gifts, business receipts or other taxable income, determines whether tax rules apply.
Important tax considerations:
- Gifts above ₹50,000 from non-relatives may be taxable under applicable provisions.
- Business payments received through UPI should be reported while filing Income Tax Returns.
- High-value transactions may be reported by banks under regulatory requirements.
Why does my UPI Payment Fail even if I am under the Transaction Limit?
A UPI payment may fail even if you have not reached the ₹1 lakh limit because:
- You have reached your bank’s daily transaction count limit.
- Your bank has set a lower UPI limit than the NPCI limit.
- You are a new UPI user with a temporary transaction restriction.
- There may be a temporary server or network issue.
Things to Remember About UPI Transaction Limits
- NPCI sets the maximum UPI transaction limit, but banks may impose lower limits.
